After Sri Satguru Gobind Singh Ji left His Holy Body in 1812, the condition of the Sikhs was not what one would associate Sikhism with.
The Maharajas, though established a 'Sikh-Raj', were of no difference. They got carried away with their powers and fame. Infact Maharaja Ranjit Singh's final moments were spent drinking liquor!
After Maharaja Ranjit Singh's death in June 27 1839, none of his heirs were able to rule Punjab.
Maharaja Kharag Singh, Maharaja Naunihal Singh and Maharaja Sher Singh were the temporary rulers whose reigns lasted only for a few days!
Raja Ranjit Singh's last heir, Dalip Singh, was only 5 years old when he sat on the throne. His mother, Rani Jindan, was separated from him and imprisoned first in Shekhupura and then Sanyukt.
On 29th March 1849, Punjab's final royal congregation was held, and Maharaja Dalip Singh sat on his father's throne for the last time. Enghlish officers, Elliot and Henry Lawrence, made the terrible announcement that Punjab would be counted as a part of British's Kingdom.
Raja Dalip Singh was sent to England after being converted into a christian.
And so, the sly englishmen took control of Punjab, 'buying' the remaining Rajas and enslaving the next generations of Punajbis, converting many into christians and punishing those who do not satisfy their needs.
Cow Butchery, which was not allowed by the former 'Sikh-Raj', was made legal. And the englishmen even opened one in Amritsar, near Harimandir Sahib, to challenge the Sikhs and see if they had any 'Sikhi' left in them or not.
