The Hukam-Namas
(Letters from Satguru Ram Singh Written From His Exile.)

... We have been told how we should preserve and respect the rights and privileges of others, Guruji has also previously written:  'Violating another's rights, O' Nanak!,  should be treated with the same abhorrence as a Muslim would feel for eating pig or Hindu for killing a cow.' ....

... O' brethren of the Khalsa ! make use of the pure food and drink. O' brethren it is the order of the Tenth Badshah ( Guru Gobind Singh) that eating with a person whose tenet of belief is not known or who does not practice the Gur-Mantar results in estranging the affection of God ....

The Namdhari Sikhs, over 2 million globally, are staunch Vegetarians. Yet Namdhari Veg. cannot be classified as mere vegetarianism, or veganism for that matter. The simplest way to describe what Namdhari Veg. is, would be to first understand who Vegans and Vegetarians, in the non-Namdhari society, are.

Vegetarians are classified as those who do not consume any animal related products other than eggs and dairy products. In the western hemisphere, however, fish and seafood is also consumed by some of those claimed to be vegetarians.

Vegans, on the other hand, are classified as those who are much more concerned about animal rights and do not consume or even use anything made out of animal body-parts/byproducts such as leather jackets, shoes, etc.

Namdhari Veg., is therefore perhaps best described as the combination of Vegetarian and Vegan. Because even though the Namdhari Sikhs refrain from consumption of meat, fish and egg, and they also do not use any product derived from animal sources, they do consume dairy products which perhaps is the only thing that keeps them from being called Vegans.

But of course, Namdhari Veg. is not merely a half way between Vegetarian and Vegan. Because though a vegan is allowed to consume plant-based food that may be prepared by a person who is non-vegan or even non-vegetarian, the Namdhari Sikhs, being the strict disciples of the Great Guru Gobind Singh, are not permitted to accept food prepared by those who have not received the sacred Mantra of the Gurus. Consequently, The Namdhari Sikhs do not consume food prepared by a meat-eater. In this respect, evidently the Namdhari Veg. life-style has a much more powerful message of pro-vegetarianism. Also, as far as the 'rule of consumption' is concerned, the Namdhari Veg. life-style also demands the total boycott of intoxicating drugs, especially alcoholic drinks.

It must also be understood clearly that though Namdhari Veg. life-style permits the consumption of dairy products, the mistreatment of cows, as being done by many inhumane and money-hungry facilities today, is strongly rejected. As it may be observed from the Glorious history of The Namdhari Sikhs who became the Martyrs of Faith for the protection of the cow and their Country's Dignity, speaking for the speechless, is undoubtedly one of the major concerns and priorities of every Namdhari Sikh.

"May The Name of Satguru Ram Singh Be Praised And By Thy Grace May Each And Every Being Be Blessed."
