Kesar Singh Chavinda

(Aad Granth Sahib - Page 314)

Sant Kesar Singhji was borned in the village of Chavinda, district of Sialkote.

His parents were: Baba Gurdit Singhji and Mata Prem Kaur.

Though Santji's parents were not exactly Namdhari, they were very much influenced by The Pressence of Namdhari Sikhs and especially that of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji in their village.

Since his early days, it was clear to his parents as well as the villagers that Kesar Singhji was made of a different material than the other boys of the same age. He was fearless yet humble. He would strongly stand by the side of smaller and weaker children and would not pay any attention to the threats or warnings posed by others.

As Kesar Singhji grew up, so did his personality and intelligence. He was a brilliant young man who could handle just about anything he faced. However, even though he was financially secure,  he would always feel like as if his life was missing something.

With The Grace of Guru, Kesar Singhji's missing 'something' was soon to be discovered.

The discovery took place when Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji Visited the village of Chavinda. The next day Satguruji's plans were to continue with His Travels to Bless the Village of Gilla where Baba Jameet Singhji resided. On the day, when Satguruji were Ready for Traveling Riding His White Horse 'Chini', Santji and his friends were in the farm herding cattles. It was then that the discovery was made.

He was Blessed with The Darshan(Sight) of The Akal Purakh Satguru. Along with The Akal was His Creation: The Sant Khalsa. It was as if Lord Vishnu along with The Deities were walking on the surface of the earth right infront of him.

Kesar Singhji, along with his friends left their cattles behind and joined The Khalsa Sangat, following Them towards Gilla.

At the house of Suba Baba Jameet Singhji, a Great Diwan was Held. Santji and his friends devoutedly listened to the Diwan after which they lined up to receive The Holy Gurmantar. Santji described in his own words that when the Gurmanter was given in his ear, he was completely absorbed in the Grace of God and every other earthly worry was put out of his mind.

After receiving Gurmantar, Santji traveled along with Satguruji. When Satguruji Decided to leave Sakhani after Staying there for 3 days, Santji requested permission from Satguruji to remain at Sakhani in order to serve The Sangat. Santji's Prayer was Answered and he stayed at the house of Sardar Hukam Singh Shah, The Wealthy GurSikh who was Blessed by Satguruji with Dhan(treasure) as well as Sant-Khalsa-Sikhi.

After serving The Sangat of Sakhani for quite a long time, Santji traveled to Wadalay to meet his sevak Jhanda Singh Mastana.

During the trip, Santji was followed by Bibi Premo, a Mastani from Sakhani who, in the state of 'Mast', grabbed his arm, and asked him to marry her! Santji, who preferred staying away from worldly relationships, raised his arm and with The Deep Thought of Sri Satguruji, reached The State of 'Mast' Himself and let out a Shout(Kook) asking for Satguruji's Kirpa(Blessings) to Help him get out of the situation.

At once, Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji Appeared in Person and Gave Hukam for the Mastani to let go of Santji's arm. Bibi Premo immediately let go of Santji's arm and while shivering with fear, fell on Satguruji's Holy Feet begging to be forgiven.

Santji then ordered her to follow him to the village where after locating Jhanda Singh(whose wife had passed away), arranged Jhanda Singh and Bibi Premo's wedding that evening during Diwan.

Santji stayed at Wadalay for sometime and then traveled to Daskay where he lived at a devouted Sikh, Seth Hukam Singh and his grandson, Seth Mehar Singh's house.

After staying at Daskay for quite sometime, Santji traveled to Gujrawala with Bhai Lehna Singh and Bhai Jhanda Singh.

At Gujrawala, another chapter of Santji's Blessings took place. It all happened when a Sikh called Kapur Singh's son passed away. Santji, who learnt about the incident long after it took place, were very upset and scolded Kapur Singh for not letting him know earlier. Since then, as long as Santji stayed at Gujrawala, there was not a child dead in the area. Santji, whose love spread towards childrens of all faiths also helped Hindus as well as muslims and healed their ill children by simply Saying The Jaikara:

The HolaMahalla of 1981 Bikarmi was held in Amritsar and Santji, along with Suba Ganda Singhji(then Titled 'Mistriji') of Gujrawala traveled to Sri Amritsar and approached Sri Satguru Partap Singh Ji requesting His Permission for the next HolaMahalla to be celebrated in Gujrawala. Satguruji Answered their Prayers even though there were many other willing and wealthy villages that requested for The Festival to be Celebrated in their villages. But Satguruji Turned-down their request Saying that 'Santji of Gujrawala' has requested Him, so He would not Say 'no' to Santji's request.

After getting the Permission from Satguruji, the Sangat of Gujrawala began with their preparation for the next Hola. However, just a few days prior to The Festival, Santji, after taking a bath as usual in the evening, came down with some kind of illness, even though he was completely healthy just a few minutes earlier. At this time, Suba Ganda Singhji's wife, Bibi Kesar Kaur came out to the Namdhari Dharamsala, where Santji usually took his bath, only to find Santji in his deteriorating condition. Sant Mangal Singh Ji also came to the scene and requested Santji not to leave The Sangat since he has just requested for HolaMahalla to be Celebrated at Gujrawala.

To the request of Sant Mangal Singhji, Sant Kesar Singhji replied that it was already the third time Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji's Divine Hukam had been Given to him to leave his body and it was not possible for him to turn down the Guru's Order again. However, he also Blessed The Sangat that the Hola that was due to be Celebrated would be prosperously celebrated. During this time, The Sangat gathered and decided to perform a Varni for Santji. But just as the decision was being made, Santji's earthly body was at peace and he departed for the Guru's Holy Feet.

Such were, Sant Kesar Singhji, The Holy Saint who was greatly respected by the Sangat and holds a Great Place in the History of Sikhism. The above mentioned Deeds of Santji are only a few of his contributions towards The Khalsa Panth. More information regarding Santji's Blessings can be found recorded in numerous publications made available by The Namdhari Darbar, Sri Bhaini Sahib.
